Melissa and Liz are twenty-something best friends renting a seaside summer cottage in the picturesque small town of Scituate, Massachusetts.
One morning, Melissa stumbles upon a handsome stranger in a tuxedo, passed out on the sun deck.
Christopher DiMarco is no ordinary drunk, however.
A respected Boston architect, he's handsome, funny and obviously well-to-do.
While Melissa finds him fascinating, Liz isn't impressed with her roommate's choice in men and suspects Chris is just a smooth talking con man.
In truth, Chris isn't all he seems. Once a star quarterback, he dropped out of high school his senior year after a bizarre and traumatic series of events.
Haunted by his past, Chris keeps his dark secrets locked up inside, and every year, on the anniversary of one fateful night, he risks his career and his life, drinking himself into a stupor.
But on this particular morning, Chris is charming and Melissa is completely mesmerized.
Their quick-witted verbal repartee begins in confrontation, but quickly leads to mutual sparks and the two spend the entire afternoon together.
As their bittersweet romance blossoms, Melissa wonders aloud why a commitment-impaired Chris still won't kiss her, and he wrestles with terrifying flashbacks.
Chris' best friend arranges sessions with a prominent psychiatrist and tries to cheer up his buddy, often with hilarious results.
Finally with the help of some unconventional therapy, Chris realizes that to hold on to a serious relationship, he must let go of the past.
But is it too late for Melissa?
One thing is certain.
Falling in love has never been more unpredictable...or more exhilarating.
